Children’s University (CU) is a charitable trust that provides children age 7 to 14 with exciting and innovative learning activities outside the classroom. Their ethos is to raise children’s aspirations by developing their understanding that learning can be ‘a satellite navigation system to better places in life…’ .
Why should my child join CU?
Research shows that participation in extra-curricular activities can positively impact on attainment and build self-confidence and resilience, thus Achieving Academic Advantage. Research also shows that children that do not have access to these opportunities fall behind, lack confidence, and fail to develop career aspirations.
Right now, over 100,000 children benefit from being members of CU. At A Star Tuition Group, we believe every child has the potential to benefit from joining CU so they too can Achieve Academic Advantage!
How can my child become a member of CU?
To begin their journey through CU, your child will need a passport – A Passport to Learning! This is for them to record all of the Learning Activities at Learning Destinations that they take part in including here at A Star Tuition Group.
These entries will be evidence of the hours of learning they do and will lead to the presentation of CU Certificates at a CU Graduation Ceremony.
Where can my child get their Passport for Learning?
In Bury LEA, the following schools are signed to CU up so if your child attends one of these schools they can speak to their teacher about getting a Passport to Learning. They can then start to gain credits for the learning they do outside of normal school hours.

Children’s University believes that children can and learn anywhere, when doing all sorts of activities, and that children learn best when they decide what they want to learn, when and where, and most importantly,
What learning activities count?
Your child can collect stamps every time they attend for their lessons at A Star Tuition Group as we are a fully accredited learning provider. They will also need to show evidence of other Learning Activities too.
For example: A 30 hour CU Award could be made up of:
⦁ 8 hours tuition at A Star Tuition Group
⦁ 4 hours of Swimming Club activities (practice, competitions, coaching)
⦁ 4 hours of Brownies (Badgework is the main focus of learning)
⦁ 8 hours of school clubs (e.g. Chess, Cookery)
⦁ 3 hours of music (tuition, practice, performance)
⦁ 3 hours of dancing class
Other Learning Activities must take place outside the normal school day – this includes before school, lunchtime and after school clubs, as well as weekend and holiday activities. Only activities at Learning Destinations which have been quality assured (validated) by CU can be included.

REMEMBER: Learning doesn’t just take place in the classroom. Children also learn at museums, on nature walks, by playing sports and music, dancing and much more besides. Check which other after school venues your child visits every week to ask if they are a CU learning destination so they can collect stamps from there too!
How can my child include a range of learning activities?
Encouraging children to try new activities and unfamiliar experiences, and promoting independence in learners is a key principle of CU learning. Within any award there should be a mix of activities, ideally no more than a third of any award spent on a single activity.
Who stamps the Passport for Learning?
We will stamp your child’s passport every half term at A Star Tuition Group to provide proof of how many hours tuition your child has received. At other Learning Destinations, the provider will stamp the passport. For school led activities, the school co-ordinator for CU will usually stamp it. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for handing their passport in for stamping.
